Inventory and Cost Accountant – Calgary, AB

Our client, a manufacturing company based in Calgary, is in search of an Inventory & Cost Accountant. This role reports to the Finance Manager and is a very important position amongst the accounting team. The successful candidate will be a key contributor to the analysis of the Company’s inventory with a goal of increased understanding, efficiency and effectiveness providing solutions for outdated processes and procedures to comply with ASPE standards.  This team member devotes a large amount of time and attention to ensuring that inventory is transferred, valued and allocated accordingly and supports the operations’ team to ensure accurate order fulfillment.

Inventory Area Duties:

  • Perform inventory transfers for internal inventory movement purposes
  • Prepare and send out sales orders and invoicing to external customers
  • Develop inventory analysis reports and analyse inventory variances
  • Assist in the improvement of internal controls related to inventory i.e. attending inventory counts on a continuous basis
  • Verify accurate standard costs and provide support with the annual valuation process of inventory at the beginning of every new fiscal year
  • Monitor inventory transactions in order to have accurate COGS accounts at month end i.e. receive all the POs related to raw materials in the system ensuring their coding is correct and calculate inventory landed costs
  • Monitor all purchases by maintaining good records of all transactions i.e.  Quotes, contracts and invoices
  • Update information on the importers’ website for all imports of raw materials and packaging
  • Reconcile all inventory accounts to the general ledger
  • Prepare monthly journal entries as required

Project Oriented Duties:

  • Support the implementation process of the new production and manufacturing modules for the existing accounting software
  • Assist in the training of the operations personnel for the implementation of the new modules
  • Assist in the maintenance of accounting forms specifically order forms that are needed to be integrated into the accounting system in an automated way as opposed to being entered manually
  • Assist the Finance Manager in other projects as needed

Other Duties:

  • Assist the Finance Manager in gathering all information for annual budgeting exercise to determine inventory needs
  • Prepare production and inventory reports as needed
  • Enter POs accurately into the system when a purchaser is not available

Equipment / Computer Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of Excel is required
  • Intermediate knowledge of Word, Power Point and email software applications

Education and requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as Inventory and/or Cost Accountant
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Accounting preferable
  • Understanding of ASPE standards in relation to inventory
  • Flexible and able to work part as a small team
  • Good knowledge of SAGE 300 (for the new module implementation project)
