Human Resource Generalist – Calgary, AB

Reporting to the People, Recognition & Culture Manager, the Human Resources Generalist engages with their internal client groups to provide expertise, support and strategic guidance in all HR related matters, including employee relations, performance management, employee engagement, compensation and talent management in a manner that drives the company’s initiatives and goals.


  • Builds a strong business relationship with internal clients
  • Acts as the point of the contact for employees and managers
  • Coaches, counsels and trains managers on all employee matters including performance management, employee relations and terminations
  • Ensures and maintains current knowledge of federal and provincial laws (including common-law) and applicable regulations related to the management of employees, reducing legal risk and ensuring regulatory compliance
  • Investigates, resolves, and documents all employee relations matters
  • Proactively manages and supports the delivery of HR processes, policies and programs
  • Increases leadership capability through coaching and by identifying development opportunities to Learning and Development Manager
  • Produces HR reports on a monthly basis to benchmark HR practices against industry standards
  • Coaches managers to bring best solutions for the organization
  • Actively identifies HR gaps; proposes and implements changes
  • Organizes and implements HR-related training (e.g., HR 101 and 201) and facilitates some of this training. Looks for opportunities to use training solutions to address day-to-day problems as well as management training
  • Completes compensation surveys, makes annual recommendations on salary increases to the Human Resource Manager
  • Works with the Recruiters to determine and implement recruitment strategy
  • Provokes positive changes in the area of employee engagement and retention
  • Other duties and projects as assigned


  • Post-secondary degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related discipline is required
  • A minimum of five (5) years of directly related HR Business Partner experience, including demonstrated success in the areas of employee relations, performance management, leadership development talent management and compensation
  • A thorough understanding of Alberta Employment Standards and Alberta Human Rights legislation is required
  • Understanding of government benefits including Canada Pension Plan, Employment Insurance, and Workers Compensation is an asset
  • Proven experience in resolving workplace and conflict issues is required. Mediation skills are an asset
  • Proficient computer skills in all Microsoft Office products is essential
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and bring new ideas to stream-line or improve work processes
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize in a fast-paced, dynamic environment is required
  • Strong problem solving skills in order to engage in joint problem solving activities with employees, managers and senior management
  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills – output oriented and able to accomplish results within firm timelines
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with a professional approach; proven business acumen is required
  • Ability to maintain confidential information, exercise sound judgment, and deal comfortably with all levels of the organization is essential
  • Analytical ability and attention to detail is essential


  • Must be flexible and have the ability to respond to a variety of changing duties and work routines
  • Some travel required
  • On occasion will work under somewhat stressful situations
